Modern Classroom Project
Tuesday November 5, 2024 8:00am - 9:00am EST
A Modern Classroom is one that is responsive to the needs and experiences of all students. This is not just a dream for educators - it’s a possibility with the Modern Classrooms Project. In a Modern Classroom, students go at their own pace. They don’t move onto the next lesson simply because it’s time or because they completed the requisite work. They move on when they have mastered the concept and are ready to build on that skill. And that’s why students in a Modern Classroom are not graded on their effort or completion, but on mastery! Intended audience: 9-12 Grade.

I-SEAL & U : Ever thought about SPED?
Tuesday November 5, 2024 8:00am - 9:00am EST
Have you looked around your school and noticed a need for instructors in special education? Have you ever considered adding a mild intensive license to your teaching license? The state of Indiana has partnered with universities to try and bridge the gap between the amount of need in special services and the number of licensed instructors available. The I-Seal program provides multiple different pathways for educators to obtain their mild-intervention license, all completely free of cost. Further, the program allows teachers to work within their own school and district for field experience. Aaron Edwards worked with U-Indy and completed the program in a hybrid style and I completed it through Taylor U working completely asynchronous but with the feedback and mentorship of professors there. We will be talking about our experience with the program. We would also have representatives from the I-Seal available for questions from the audience (I would arrange this) and links and resources available for those who attended. The program is open for teachers K-12 but is only applicable to individuals who already have a teaching license.

Three practices you can implement for immediate, positive and lasting change!
Tuesday November 5, 2024 10:30am - 11:30am EST
This session will encourage learning leaders to think about a variety of possible ways to both start and end their school day to meet a variety of student needs. We will explore a tool that will allow teachers to know what motivates their students on a much deeper level so they can ditch the classroom reward system that most likely is not meeting the needs of many students and causing quite a bit of stress on the teacher! Last, but not least- let's talk about how to effectively and efficiently deal with those students who have challenging behavior and sometimes we have to call in staff to support them. We have some really great suggestions to seamlessly move supporting staff in and out of your classroom with as little added disruption as possible AND get you some data to show just how much you are doing to try and help the scholar be successful. Participants should leave with many resources and new connections in the Wayne community that they can reach out to for support! Intended audience: K-6 Grade.

Attendance, Trauma Informed Care, and Our Students
Tuesday November 5, 2024 11:45am - 12:45pm EST
It's no secret that chronic absenteeism has become one of the most pressing issues facing our nation's schools. We believe that building a deeper understanding of why students might be struggling with attendance and the role that trauma-informed care can play in improving their attendance may be a missing piece to that puzzle. We will synthesize these ideas into an easily digestible format as well as tie them to current scenarios and broader data from our district. We hope to send our audience home with actionable steps to improve attendance and psychological safety in their buildings.

Strategies for Peer Writing Conferences
Tuesday November 5, 2024 11:45am - 12:45pm EST
Effective peer conferencing is a learned skill that requires teaching and practice. There are more peers in the room than you, and it’s all about building a community of writers! If you find that many students tend to give global responses to their classmates’ writing, sharing how they feel about the piece (“Wow, that was great!”) rather than providing specific feedback about what works and what doesn’t, then join us in exploring some steps that teachers can take to ensure productive peer conferences during Writer’s Workshop. We will take a look at feedback through the lenses of Compliments, Questions, Suggestions, and Corrections. The true value of peer conferences is that writers can find an audience to share their writing, and receive feedback every day. Intended audience: K-6 Grade.

What if I fall? What if UFLI?
Tuesday November 5, 2024 11:45am - 12:45pm EST
UFLI (pronounced “you fly”) is an explicit phonics program that was developed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute to teach students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading. While the program encompasses 128 phonics lessons, it was also designed and researched to be an intervention to be used with struggling readers at any grade level. Intended audience: K-6 Grade.

While we have not adopted UFLI as our core curriculum or for use as a Tier 2 intervention in Wayne Township, some teachers have begun using the materials to support small group instruction for students who are working below grade level.

In this session, we will equip teachers with an understanding of what UFLI is, share our experiences with using the materials, and explore how UFLI resources can be used to supplement and extend students’ phonics knowledge in small group instruction. We will also share alignment between our district curriculum, Indiana state standards, and UFLI.

This session is intended for 2nd-6th grade teachers who are looking for resources to support small group instruction for students who are working in below- grade level phonics skills, not for K-2nd grade teachers to use to enhance core curriculum. This is not UFLI program training, and participants will not receive UFLI manuals or materials through participation in the session.

Oral Language in PreK-1: Building Background Through Text Sets, Vocabulary Instruction, and Hands-On Experiences
Tuesday November 5, 2024 1:00pm - 2:00pm EST
Oral language and a strong working vocabulary are prerequisites for reading comprehension. It is absolutely critical that our youngest learners are given ample opportunities to develop language and background knowledge as a building block to comprehension. This is even more crucial for those students who are multilingual learners. In this session, we will share several ways to build this essential practice into your already existing schedule - through content area integration, vocabulary instruction, interactive read-alouds, share questions, stations, dramatic play, and more! Repetition and authentic engagement are key, and we will help you build these routines and structures into your PreK-First Grade classrooms. *This session was also offered last year and has only had a few minor changes from that session. Intended audience: K-2 Grade.

The Last Business Cycle--Strategies to Protect Your Nest Egg as You Near Retirement
Tuesday November 5, 2024 2:15pm - 3:15pm EST
The last seven years of teaching should be a time of joy, but I see too many of my colleagues stressed about personal finance. I have a series 6 and an insurance license, and I want to educate my colleagues on various strategies that can help you retire on time. I saw many of my colleagues feel like they were forced to work at the end of their career after the 2008 market crash. We will discuss break even points for Long Term Care Insurance, and ways to back into "Long Term Care Coverage" if you have already had a major health event. If I can help one person, this session is worth it!

Three practices you can implement for immediate, positive and lasting change!
Tuesday November 5, 2024 2:15pm - 3:15pm EST
